Appointment Prep
Our clinic uses multiple tools to help our pediatricians diagnose and treat your child.
This paperwork and documents we collect are essential for your appointment. Failure to
complete paperwork or deliver requested documents for your appointment will result in
delays in your child's care.

Your Questions Answered
What does Kia Ora mean?
Kia Ora means "hello" in Maori. Maori are the native persons of New Zealand.
I would like to speak to the doctor privately without my child in the room, is this possible?
Absolutely! Please remember that ideally we need you to communicate this request PRIOR
to you arriving for your appointment. However, if you wish to speak
with the doctor privately during your appointment please communicate this request and we
will do our best to accommodate you if possible. While most times we are able to accommodate
your request for your appointment, depending on the length of your appointment, you may
need to book a second appointment if there isn't sufficient time available.
Why are families asked to come 15 minutes early for their appointment?
Families are busy and no-one enjoys waiting for the doctor! Coming early helps us keep on schedule
by allowing our office appropriate amount of time to properly check you in. We need that time to
make sure we have your updated information, scan into the child's medical chart any paperwork you
brought, get your child's height, weight and other vitals. When you arrive later than requested
we end up using your appointment time with the doctor to do those things.
Does this mean you never run late?
We wish! Sadly yes we are sometimes behind. This is not within our control. Remember that every
family is important and sometimes unexpected and difficult issues come up. This means they may need
additional care. We make every effort to get back on schedule, but we will not compromise your
appointment (you will receive your full time with the doctor) or patient care.
If I am late for my appointment why do I not get the full appointment time?
While we totally understand that late happens (especially in Calgary - hello snow storms!) we try
to be respectful of all our patients’ time. Many families are trying to work with a very busy
schedule and have obligations that they are trying to accommodate (such as picking up other siblings,
other appointments etc.). As such we may be unable to accommodate families who arrive late, when
another family has arrived on time or early. If 3 families arrive 5 minutes late the doctor would
be behind 15 min!
NOTE: ON SNOW DAYS OUR CLINIC WILL SEE PATIENTS/FAMILIES IN THE ORDER THAT THEY ARRIVE TO TRY TO
ACCOMMODATE ALL FAMILIES WHO MADE IT THROUGH THE SNOW TO GET HERE! HOWEVER WE STILL MAY NOT BE
ABLE TO ACCOMMODATE ALL PATIENTS WHO ARRIVE LATE.
Why do you charge for missed appointments? How do you calculate these charges?
We have quite a demand from families for sooner appointments. The current wait time for a
developmental/behavioural appointment can be as long as 6 months. Families get frustrated when
they can’t get in to see their doctor when they are worried about their child. When a family
fails to cancel their appointment, this leaves an empty space which could have been filled by
another family. This contributes to increasing ALL wait times for an appointment. Charging
for missed appointments is our way of trying to ensure that families NOT planning to attend
their appointment do us the courtesy of letting us know so that we can help another family be
seen sooner. Please call our office no later than 24 hours prior to your appointment to cancel
or change your appointment.
NOTE: ALBERTA HEALTH CARE DOES NOT COVER MISSED APPOINTMENTS - THESE ARE TO BE PAID FOR BY THE PATIENT.
I have seen the pediatrician before - why do I need a new referral?
Our pediatric clinic is a specialty clinic, which means we DO NOT provide primary care. All
general concerns need to be seen through your family doctor. Typically, if we are not following
up on a concern for your child at least every 6 months, the file is closed so that we can accommodate
other children who need to be seen. You are ALWAYS welcome back, however if your child's file has
been closed, we require a new referral to reactivate your child's chart.
Do you accept private patients?
Yes! However, while all patients are welcome to pay privately for care, you are NOT shortlisted
or given priority over other patients who pay through Provincial Health Care. Payment for these
patients is only accepted in cash.
Why do you charge for uninsured services?
Alberta Health care covers certain services provided by your doctor, however doctors cannot bill
Alberta Health for some of the services they may provide. As well, patients who reside outside
Alberta may not have coverage by their province for services. If your coverage does not cover a
provided service you will be billed for that service. In these cases, you will be notified that
a charge will apply for a service before the service is provided. Payment for these services can be
made by cash or e-transfer. For additional questions about uninsured services please feel free to
contact our office.
Who designed your logo?
We believe in supporting local talent and children. While we had many lovely submissions, we chose
a design by a 12 year old girl who has an interest in art, photography and graphic design.
